About the opportunitySWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a Cultural Resources Staff Archaeologist to join our Hawai'i Cultural Resources Program to work on projects throughout the Hawaiian Islands. The position is based on O'ahu. This is a non-exempt, hourly role and work is currently dependent upon project needs and candidate availability. We appreciate the time and effort invested by all applicants and will carefully consider each submission.What you will accomplishThe ideal candidate should have experience in Hawaiian archaeology and possess a knowledge of Hawaiian culture and history. We are looking for an archaeologist based on O'ahu, but willing to travel to the neighbor islands for fieldwork. Successful applicants must be able to conduct archaeological fieldwork including survey, test excavation, data recovery, and monitoring as well as assist with background research and report preparation. This individual must also adhere to the safety program and look out for the safety of others, promptly communicating and mitigating safety hazards.As a Staff Archaeologist, part of your job responsibilities will include supervising a small crew while conducting cultural resources fieldwork. This includes:

  • Independently assigning and directing the activities of others on behalf of SWCA, often in remote areas without immediate guidance from senior managers, to ensure quality and on-time delivery.
  • Ensuring that employees understand their responsibilities and delegated tasks and being held accountable if crew members under your supervision are not performing their activities correctly, productively, and safely.
  • Serving as a conduit of communication between employees and senior managers, including communicating issues to relevant senior managers.
  • Receiving and resolving complaints from employees in the field.
  • Monitoring team productivity and offering timely performance guidance, including determining when correction action is needed and delivering appropriate feedback.Experience and qualifications for success
    • A Bachelor's or higher degree in archaeology, anthropology, Hawaiian studies, or a closely related field
    • Detailed knowledge of Hawaiian culture and history
    • An accredited Field School Certification is preferred
    • At least two years of experience with a wide range of field methodologies, including archaeological survey, test excavation, and monitoring
    • Experience in conducting laboratory analysis of artifacts and other cultural remains
    • The ability to conduct background research and assist in the preparation of technical reports
    • Current valid driver's license and the ability to safely operate a 4wd vehicle on rugged, back country roads
    • Ability to travel to a location, walk, and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, often at high altitudes, and the ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds
    • Hawai'i field experience preferred
    • Must reside on O'ahu, HI
